Book Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook Review :

Living on the west coast make it a lot easier to visit all the Hawaiian Islands, including the big island. Feels like, we have been using this series now for more than a decade - and have all of them throughout multiple editions. Having just come back from the Big Island, I bought both the book edition and the app. I came way less satisfied. They both contain the exact same information, less the GPS coordinates that are found in the app (not always accurate, but mostly so) - but no in the book. This time, I found the information less useful. We were doing diving, hiking and general tourism activities. They are all there to do some degree, but the details found in the big island series seem less specific and more confusing than other island versions. For example, there are two descriptions of directions to a queens bath. They describe two different entrances. One that gets you in north and the other gets in you south of the bath. The description of the walk in from parking doesn't specify which one they are talking about. Hence, you have to guess (and we guessed wrong). The description provides estimated distances, but if you start going in the wrong direction to end up walking that distance to find out you've gone the wrong direction. Turns out that google maps did a better job describing than the book or the app. I acknowledge and benefited that there is a distinct upshot from going in the wrong direction which is we found shoreline devoid of people. That brings up the other downside which is implicitly acknowledged around different versions b/c of liability. These books have become more popular, but that leads to lots more people at these more rare sites. The green sand beach is an example. I think that area has been ruined by the traffic of people/trucks on the path and the garbage that people leave behind. it's a shame. I first visited that beach in 1996 and periodically over time since then. The once quiet path is now rutted by commercial trucks and ATV whose only function is to drive people the 2.5 miles to the beach. There are now multiple deeply abused off-road trucks that scar the land and make the hike out to the beach much less pleasant - unless you enjoy the dust they kick in your face or the obnoxious driving behavior (hint -walk along the water front where they cannot go and you're better off). The off the beat beach is now crowded and strewn with garbage. Sad. This is the primary reason that I think that this will be the last of the revealed series for us.I would have hoped that given all the volcano activity that they would have provided some insight into either how to see or current hints about how to deal with all the closures. Notedly absent of information. I did find who they thought were better vendors for scuba diving to be very useful. We chose based on their recommendations and have to say that I think the Kohala divers up north were much better than the charters we used in Kona.So all in all - a mixed review which is why I gave it three stars. If you buy this book and want to do more than sit on a beach, do yourself a favor and do some homework on web searches. I found those with more useful information about specific activities.
Nowhere in this guide is it ever mentioned that the big Island is suffering from a serious problem: Coqui frogs. They are not native to the island and where certainly not an issue 15 years ago. Now, unless you close the window AND put ear-plugs in your vacation will be without sleep. That would be worth mentioning don't you think? I advise all travelers to do their own research since there are parts of the island where the frogs have not spread quite than dense. Most of the small islands are apparently ok since they took care of the problem early but I think the big island is in serious trouble now. Again I don't think it's right that a serious problem like that is just swept under the rug.90db is like a lawn-mower - noise pollution, and not a Hawaiian forrest experience. Judging on how many places in Hawaii this travel guide gets mentioned, I completely get why this is not brought up in this book.
